Same-sex wedding cake feud: Victoria Childress says Christian 'convictions' exempt her from 2007 Iowa Public Accommodations law; it's not discrimination if she does it

KCCI reports about an attempt by Janelle Sievers and Trina Vodraska to buy a cake for their wedding.

Victoria Childress: "I will tell you that I am a Christian and I do have convictions... And I said 'I'm sorry to tell you that I'm not going to be able to do your cake.'
It is my right as a business owner... and it's not to discriminate against them. I did not belittle them... There was no condescending remarks made."

Janelle Sievers' fiancee, Trina Vodraska (on the right in the photo) said, "It was degrading, you know. It was like she chastised us for wanting to do business with her... I went there for a cake."

Other cake makers in Iowa have started to weigh in — and KCCI did a follow-up story.

Dana Schaub and Cynthia Hendrikson own the Devilish Pig Bakery. Dana said, "To have someone say, 'Im sorry, because your lifestyle is different from mine, I'm not gonna take care of you and help you and I don't want your business.' It's wrong on so many levels.

Three Chicks Bakery's Amanda Laurich: "I have gay family members — two actually — and if any one of them wanted to get married I wouldn't want them to go through the stress or feeling disappointed and you know having that really take away from the thing that should be really special for their day."

  1. Great! Wonderful Christian principles. A Christian should not be forced to deal with people that are ungodly.
