Massive NE Wildfire still not under control; has burnt 1/4 of Niobrara National Scenic River corridor; river closed east of Smith Falls

At least 50,000 acres (about 78 square miles) across three of Nebraska's 93 counties have burned — Cherry, Brown and Keya Paha. Earlier reports of 150 square miles of damage were revised downward after viewing of infrared photos.
The area is immense and sparsely populated. Example: Cherry County is about big as Massachusetts (minus Cape Cod), but home to just 5,472 souls — an average of 1.02 per square mile; half live in Valentine. Photos: Dave Weaver via MSNBC.
